The 340B Drug Program Provides Greater Access to Care

The 340B Drug Program Provides Greater Access to Care

Access to Care – CHCS uses 340B savings to offset uncompensated care and bad debt, thus helping us keep our doors open and able to provide our communities access to care.

The term “Access to Care” gets used a lot, but what does it really mean? Many hospitals in Kansas have been forced to close or eliminate the services they offer that operate at a loss. For example, in recent months we’ve seen hospitals in our area make the difficult decision to stop offering obstetric and home health services. At CHCS, the 340B program helps us provide high quality care and services in our home communities. The 340B program is under attack by the pharmaceutical companies as they continue to put their profits ahead of patient needs and safety. Since 2020, CHCS has seen a significant reduction (greater than a $1M) in 340B savings year to year due to certain drug manufacturers restricting their discounts at contract pharmacies (see graphic). CHCS, like many other rural hospitals, is unfairly targeted by these restrictions because we don’t own a community-based pharmacy. We recognize and value the vital services provided by our local pharmacies and work with them to realize 340B savings and then pass on the 340B discount pricing to patients in need. A threat to the 340B program is a threat to our patients’ access to care.

**If you or a loved one struggle to afford your medications, please discuss the 340B Program with your doctor or nurse. They may be able to assist you with accessing more affordable medications.**
