Additional Staff Trained in Dry Needling

Three additional physical therapy staff members recently attended training to become certified in Level I Dry Needling.

Dry needling is a technique that physical therapists use to treat musculoskeletal pain and movement issues. It’s almost always used as part of a larger pain management plan that could include exercise, stretching, massage and other techniques. During a dry needling treatment, a provider inserts thin, sharp needles through your skin to treat underlying myofascial trigger points.

Trigger points are knotted, tender areas that develop in your muscles. These trigger points are highly sensitive and can be painful when touched. Sometimes, a trigger point may be near the location of your pain. But they’re also often the cause of referred pain, or pain that affects another part of your body.

"I am so excited to utilize the skills learned throughout my dry needling course to help the Frankfort and Centralia communities in alleviating their pain in a safe and effective manner. While dry needling may seem scary, it ultimately helps to reduce muscle tension and diminish the size/irritability of those trigger points found within the muscle,” said Madison Emmons, DPT.

Physical therapists use needles to alleviate your trigger points. When dry needling is applied to your muscles and tissues, it can decrease tightness, increase blood flow and reduce local and referred pain. Providers use solid needles that don’t contain any kind of medication. This is why the technique is called “dry.” Nothing is injected into your body.

With this training, CHCS now offers dry needling in Centralia, Frankfort and Holton in addition to Onaga, where Maribelle Collado has offered the service for several years. “The CHCS rehab department is pleased to now offer dry needling services in three additional clinics locations, allowing more patients to benefit from this technique,” said Stephani Rumbo, CHCS Rehab and Fitness manager.

The service will be offered later this summer in St. Marys.
