CHCS provides an array of specialty clinics in several of our locations each month. Tiffany Engelken, APRN, is our September Specialty Clinic Provider of the Month. Tiffany is a Dermatology Certified Nurse Practitioner with 18 years of experience, and she offers an array of services from skin cancer screenings to cosmetics.
Tiffany recently took time to answer a few questions.
What services do you offer?
I offer skin cancer screening, removal of skin cancer and skin lesions, treatment of acne and rashes, and cosmetic procedures.
Why did you choose your specialty, and what do you like most about it?
There are many rewarding aspects to dermatology: Helping someone resolve a rash and obtain relief from itching, helping a patient find confidence after clearing severe acne, or finding a melanoma before it has the chance to spread beyond the skin.
What kind of extra training did your specialty require?
I have 18 years of experience in dermatology and I am a Dermatology Certified Nurse Practitioner. I have additional training in cosmetic procedures such as Botox, fillers, chemical peels, microneedling, and laser treatments.
What are the most common problems for patients in your area of specialty and/or what kinds of patients are you able to help?
I treat diseases of the skin, hair, and nails. Finding skin cancer early is my passion, and I recommend total body skin exams annually. I use a tool called dermoscopy, which is light and magnification to evaluate network patterns in moles to aid in finding melanoma early. Acne in teenagers is very rewarding to treat. I also treat a lot of women in their 30s or 40s who struggle with hormonal acne. I see rashes of all kinds. Some common rashes include eczema, poison ivy, scabies, molluscum, and psoriasis. I am also able to provide cosmetic services at my primary practice site in Manhattan, Kansas.
How can patients improve their health in your area of specialty?
Protect your skin from the sun by wearing sunscreen, reapplying every 2 hours, and avoiding midday sun from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wear sun-protective clothing such as a wide-brim hat, long sleeves, or UV-protected clothing). Watch your skin for changing skin lesions. Get a total body skin exam annually.
What do you like about seeing patients at Community HealthCare System?
I grew up in this community, so seeing patients at Community HealthCare System is like going home and caring for many of the people that helped encourage me in my youth. I feel like I am able to serve this community by saving them time in travel to Manhattan or Topeka for dermatology services.
